I have been on the Bergen Community College Department of Dental Hygiene Program faculty for 18 years. When Melissa Obrotka, a former student of the Program, joined the existing faculty as an adjunct Professor, her colleagues were quick to notice her fresh outlook on clinical care. She had vast experience both in and outside the Program, having worked for an extensive Prosthetic Dental Practice. Eager to learn and eager to teach, Melissa had an intense desire to transform portions of the educational disciplines that were traditional to the Program for many years. There was new information, new techniques, and a new strategy she felt should supplement the clinical Program. While working alongside Melissa, I learned many things as well. She helped revamp my thinking about periodontal disease, its etiology, and the approach to lessen and eliminate its cause.

Guided Biofilm Therapy and state-of-the-art “Airflow” technologies became part of the Bergen Hygiene Program. Melissa gave many didactic and clinical lectures, paving the way for a new approach. In addition, she instilled in her students the proper pathway to “GBT” care.

As a clinician, Melissa has a comfortable chairside demeanor. Her students admire her and eagerly learn from her. She readily discussed traditional hand instrument disciplines and improved techniques chairside for countless students.
