Thanksgiving forces a pause in a profession that rarely stops moving. It's a moment to step back and look at what's actually advancing dentistry, not because legacy systems changed, but because we finally decided to practice like real healthcare providers. It's up to us to tag in our medical counterparts and behave like clinicians who prevent disease, not just polish teeth.
Periodontal disease is a medical disease with a dental therapy. So, LFG!!
I'm grateful for the breakthroughs and mindset shifts that are reshaping prevention, elevating education, and building a culture where oral health is understood as whole-body health, empowering us to lead meaningful change.
Here are some tools and technologies I am thankful for and believe every clinician should have on their radar to elevate prevention. Every tool below isn't just an innovation; it's evidence that we're stepping into the leadership role patients have been waiting for, making it essential to stay informed and involved.
1. Salivary Diagnostics That Finally Tell the Truth
For decades, dentistry relied on surface-level assumptions. Salivary diagnostics blew that open. Today, we can measure microbiome diversity, inflammatory biomarkers, high-risk pathogens, and oral-systemic risk profiles with real data.
These tests give patients a clearer understanding of their health than most annual medical visits.
This isn't "extra." It is medicine. And it's finally in the hands of dental clinicians.
2. Guided Biofilm Therapy: Prevention with Precision
GBT is the first protocol that respects biology instead of fighting it. Visualize biofilm, disrupt it with intention, protect tissue, and give patients an experience that reinforces trust, not fear.
Patients feel the difference. Clinicians see the difference. Inflammation responds to the difference.
GBT is a preventive approach that finally aligns with research rather than tradition.
3. Ozone Integration for Biohacking Oral Health
Aqueous ozone delivers powerful antimicrobial action without disrupting the microbiome. No resistance, no collateral damage, maximum impact.
This is modern terrain medicine inside the operatory. It supports Perio therapy, implant maintenance, early caries care, and inflammation reduction — the trifecta of long-term health.
It's not "alternative." It's the future.
4. The Oral Health Awareness Project
This movement exists to end the myth of "just a cleaning."
Oral inflammation affects cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, immune burden, and metabolic health. Patients deserve to know that.
This project educates, empowers, and sets a new expectation: your hygienist is your first line of defense against chronic disease.
Since periodontal disease is a medical condition, the dental profession must assume medical-level responsibility. Collaborating with physicians and communicating risk unites us in a shared mission for better health.

5. A Profession Breaking Up with Legacy Thinking
The old model is dead weight: six-month recall cycles created by insurance, reactive Perio therapy, avoiding systemic conversations, ignoring biomarkers, and keeping outdated workflows because "that's how we've always done it."
Clinicians are done with it. Patients are done with it.
And 2025 dentistry finally reflects that evolution. This is the cultural moment we've been waiting for.
6. The UI Economy: The Catalyst Reshaping Dentistry
Patients expect seamless digital experiences, clarity, visuals, diagnostics, dashboards, and personalized explanations.
The UI (User-Interface) Economy is forcing dentistry to modernize, and honestly, thank God, it's an exciting time to be at the forefront of change.
People want to understand their inflammation, see their data, and participate in their health. That demand is building a new culture rooted in transparency, access, and accountability.
The clinicians leading this shift aren't waiting for permission. They're building what dentistry should have been decades ago.

As much as I love the tech, the science, and the momentum our profession is building. I'm also profoundly grateful for the simple things that actually sustain us.
Time with the people we love. Space to rest. Moments that remind us why health matters in the first place.
This season, I'm thankful for good health, authentic connection, and the happiness that comes from being present.
Recharge. Laugh. Eat. Rest.
We'll keep changing dentistry, but first, let's enjoy what's right in front of us.
XO,
Mel
